Context note: Grandpapa is a newbie to Internet Marketing. He wants to enter the world of e- commerce by blogging. His grandson, FreeChoice, has agreed to teach him the skill and art of blogging.
Tutorial 2: Be Passionate About Your Topic
“Identify your passion before you start to blog”
“Howdy, Grandpapa, I’m back.”
“Hi, FreeChoice, what took you so long?”
‘Grandpa, it was only one day!”
“O’K, I’m only teasing, but I sure am in a hurry to get going. Every day that passes by is ‘goodbye’ to another 500 bucks!’
“I’ll not comment on that now, Grandpa, but lets move into the garden so that we can begin our tutorial on learning to blog”
“Into the garden? Don’t you remember I said I want to blog, not jog? Blogging happens at the computer, and jogging happens in the garden!”
“Just do as I say, Grandpa, there is some method in my madness. And bring a pencil and notebook along, I’ll wait in the gazebo.”
…………………………
“O’K grandpa, let’s start at the very beginning. Open the notebook and write each of the following headings on a separate page:
BB-guns
Once you have written these headings, Grandpa, take another 5 pages and write the same questions as if they were asked 5 years ago.”
“FreeChoice, I think I know where you are heading, but don’t you think we are wasting time? I really am keen to get into the nitty gritty of learning to blog, but it seems to me as if we are stalling for time.”
“Grandpa, trust me. This exercise may seem a waste of time, but on the long run, it will save you much time and energy. These questions are intended to help you identify or confirm your real passion, or passions in life. If you blog about something that you are passionate about, it will show. Your readers will sense it and if they share the same passion they will come back time and again. If you blog about something that you really love, you will enjoy it, and the time you spend writing will stimulate, rather than drain, your energy levels.”
“Wow, FreeChoice, that’s a long speech! It seems like you’re passionate about this idea! But still, don’t you think we should start by setting up a blog site, and then get to the topics later on?”
“No, Grandpa. Remember, passion drives people. If you can identify a strong passion in your life, it will positively impact on everything you do as you develop and learn all the skills involved in successful blogging. Also, Grandpa, you have referred a number of times to the money you’d like to make. Keep in mind that money, in itself, is not what motivates people. It is what they want to do when they have money that drives them. Furthermore, Grandpa, whatever money there is to make, or to lose, will still be there in a month’s time or more. Let us build a solid blogging foundation and then move on from there.
“O’K FreeChoice, let’s then start at the very beginning. You go and organize some coffee, and I will get going, but I have a feeling that I already know what the outcome will be.”
……………………………
Two hours later…
“How’s it going Grandpa? It’s nearly time for supper, have you made progress?”
“Yes, FreeChoice, here’s a list of 5 things that I really am interested in and of which I have some knowledge. I have gone further than what you have suggested. I have rated each one out of ten according to my interest in them. Unfortunately it has not helped much, because the final scores are very close. Look at my list, and give me your impressions.”
- Homeschooling
- Remote control helicopters
- Organic gardening
- Secret societies
- The Beetles
“Wow, Grandpa, this is quite an impressive list!
“I must say, FreeChoice these topics do turn me on, but I just can’t see that one can make money with any of them. I was really thinking about blogging about Internet Marketing. It seems to me that all the blogging millionaires are into some kind of e-commerce or Internet Marketing.”
That’s not quite true Granddad, but let’s pick up from here after supper. I have ordered a pizza and it has just arrived.”

Author’s note: The idea of identifying one’s true passion and then building your business around it, is well established in industrial and social psychology. It is also as relevant to building a successful website, as it is to a successful blog. Most well known instructors in Internet Marketing circles emphasize the importance of this concept. The following article by SEO2020 elaborates more fully on the same concept: http://www.seo2020.com/market-research/discover-your-passions-html.
